Project check

Calculate sections by their real thickness

Driveways often have thickened edges, aprons, turnarounds, or separately placed panels. Equal sections are useful only when length, width, and depth match; calculate different geometry independently and add the order volumes.

Formula

Driveway volume

panel length × panel width × thickness × equal panels

The result is the geometric volume before waste. Unequal parking pads, aprons, flares, and walkways should be measured as separate rectangles and added to the final order.

Measuring

Break the footprint into panels

  1. Sketch the driveway and divide it into rectangles.
  2. Record the inside form dimensions for each rectangle.
  3. Check depth along edges and the centerline.
  4. Use the section multiplier only for rectangles with the same dimensions.
Worked example

40 ft × 10 ft driveway at 5 in thick

Measured40 × 10 × (5 ÷ 12) = 166.67 ft³

With 10% waste166.67 × 1.10 = 183.33 ft³

Ready-mix183.33 ÷ 27 = 6.79 yd³

80 lb bags183.33 ÷ 0.60 = 305.56, rounded up to 306

Driveway-specific assumptions

  • The example does not prescribe slab thickness or reinforcement.
  • Thickened edges, curbs, drainage channels, aprons, and transitions are separate volumes.
  • The waste field does not account for a major over-excavation or unstable subgrade.

Structural and site checks

Vehicle loads, soils, drainage, frost, reinforcement, concrete mix, joints, and curing affect performance. Follow the project design and local rules, and use a qualified professional where required.
