Flooring takeoff formula
boxes = length × width × rooms × (1 + waste %) ÷ box coverageBoxes are rounded up. The actual purchased area will usually be slightly higher than the waste-adjusted target because partial cartons are not assumed.
Estimate measured area, purchase area with cutting waste, and full cartons for equal rectangular rooms.
For different room sizes, calculate each room separately and add the cartons.
The calculator rounds purchase area to complete cartons, which means the delivered coverage may exceed the selected waste percentage. Room shape, board direction, stagger rules, minimum end pieces, and transitions determine whether that surplus is usable.

Simple square rooms may need less waste than diagonal layouts, narrow hallways, patterned tile, or rooms with many corners. Follow the product instructions and installer’s layout plan.
Split L-shaped spaces into rectangles and add their areas. Exclude permanent areas that will not receive flooring only when the installation plan calls for it. Confirm carton coverage, dye lot, acclimation, underlayment, expansion gaps, and subfloor requirements.
