Bulk materials

Gravel & topsoil calculator

Convert a rectangular coverage area into bulk volume, estimated weight, and full bags.

Enter the coverage area

Use separate calculations for areas with different depths, then add the order quantities.

Units
Area and depth
Product assumptions

Typical density varies by product, grading, moisture, and compaction. Ask the supplier for the best tons-per-yard value.

Formula

Volume and weight

volume = length × width × depth × areas
tons = cubic yards × bulk density

The selected extra percentage is applied before volume, weight, and bag quantities are displayed.

Material choice

Density is not universal

Topsoil, crushed stone, pea gravel, and river rock do not weigh the same. Moisture and compaction also matter, so use the supplier's density whenever possible.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 in deep

Measured volume20 × 10 × (3 ÷ 12) = 50.00 ft³

Add 10%50.00 × 1.10 = 55.00 ft³

Convert to yards55.00 ÷ 27 = 2.04 yd³

At 1.4 tons/yd³2.04 × 1.4 = 2.85 tons

Loose placement, compaction, settlement, grade variation, and containment affect real coverage. Measure separate areas at their actual planned depths.
