Plywood sheet count formula
sheets = area × (1 + waste %) ÷ sheet areaThe result rounds up to whole panels. A standard 4 × 8 foot sheet covers 32 square feet before cutting.
Estimate full sheets of plywood, OSB, sheathing, MDF, or other panels from project area and sheet size.
Calculate rectangular areas with the same size together. Handle irregular sections separately for a more realistic cutting plan.
Dividing project area by sheet area can understate the order when grain direction, seam support, staggered joints, edge quality, or required full-length pieces prevent scraps from being reused.

Area alone cannot account for every seam or unusable offcut. Sketch panel orientation around openings and supports, then compare that layout with the area-based estimate before ordering.
