Roof covering

Roofing shingle calculator

Start with the measured roof-plane area to estimate roofing squares and full shingle bundles, including waste.

Enter the roof takeoff

Measure each roof plane and add the areas before using this form.

Units
Area and coverage

A roofing square equals 100 ft². Verify the coverage printed on the exact shingle bundle.

Formula

How the bundle estimate works

bundles = roof area × (1 + waste %) ÷ bundle coverage

The result rounds up because roofing is sold in complete bundles. Roof squares are based on the same waste-adjusted purchase area.

Measure carefully

Use actual roof-plane area

Do not use the home’s floor area as the roof area. Pitch, overhangs, dormers, and intersecting planes all add surface area. Break the roof into rectangles and triangles, calculate each plane, and add them together.

Before ordering shingles

Confirm the manufacturer’s bundles-per-square and coverage. Waste varies with roof complexity, valleys, hips, starter courses, and shingle style. This material estimate does not evaluate deck condition, flashing, underlayment, ventilation, structural capacity, or safe installation practices.

Worked example

A 2,000 ft² roof with 15% waste

Purchase area2,000 × 1.15 = 2,300 ft²

Roofing squares2,300 ÷ 100 = 23.00 squares

At 33.3 ft²/bundle2,300 ÷ 33.3 = 69.07, rounded up to 70 bundles

Final checkUse the coverage printed on the exact product; bundles per square can vary.

Waste is driven by roof shape

A plain gable roof usually has fewer cuts than a roof with hips, valleys, dormers, short courses, and many penetrations. Enter an allowance that reflects the takeoff and installation plan rather than applying the same percentage to every roof.

Items this result does not count

Starter shingles, ridge or hip cap, underlayment, ice barrier, flashing, drip edge, nails, ventilation, and replacement decking are separate product decisions. Some field shingles can be cut for starter or cap only when the manufacturer permits it.
