Paving material

Asphalt calculator

Estimate hot-mix asphalt tons, compacted volume, and material cost for driveways, parking areas, and paths.

Enter paved dimensions and compacted thickness

Measure the finished paved footprint and use the compacted—not loose—lift thickness.

Ordering assumptions

Mix density and minimum delivery quantities vary. Confirm the supplier's design density, lift requirements, and delivered price.

Formula

How asphalt tonnage is calculated

tons = area × compacted thickness × density ÷ 2,000

The allowance is applied before weight is calculated. Actual yield varies with mix design and field compaction.

Driveway planning

Material is only one cost

Excavation, geotextile, base stone, grading, drainage, trucking, mobilization, and finish rolling can exceed the hot-mix material cost.

Worked example

A 40 ft × 20 ft driveway at 3 in compacted

Compacted volume40 × 20 × (3 ÷ 12) = 200 ft³

Add 5%200 × 1.05 = 210 ft³, or 7.78 yd³

At 145 lb/ft³210 × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 15.23 tons

OrderingConfirm truck capacity, delivery minimums, and whether multiple lifts are required.
